Journal: Music: Shows I've been to

2003

The Strokes w/ Kings of Leon
October 21, Bill Graham Civic Center, San Francisco, CA

I know how obvious it is for me to say that The Strokes put on a great show since I'm a card carrying fan club member so I won't say it... but I am thinking it! They played a good mix of new songs and old songs, and the new songs sound much more realized live than on the CD. I was in awe of Fabrizio's endurance on the drums cuz I sure as hell could never keep a beat as steady as a drum machine like he does. Kings of Leon were exactly what I expected to them to be-- very southern, very into their page boy hair cuts, and very solid performers. Not much else to say except that "Holy Roller Novacaine" is their best song. Oh, Devin, Mike, and I went together. Devin and Mike wen to smoke or get beer or something and they left me alone. I was standing around bopping my head and this guy creeps up to me and starts attempting to spit game. Well, I thought, 'why not?' Then he told me that he had just moved to SF from Detroit and that he came to the show alone. I felt kinda sorry for him so I figured I may as well keep him company until Mike and Devin returned. However, giving him the benefit of the doubt was a bit of a bad idea since he started talking about how his last girlfriend had to go back to Japan because her visa expired... Then he said how his ideal set up for a band was to have two lead Japanese singers... Gee, festish, ya think? Anyway, I finally realized that Mike and Devin were standing not too far away from me and I said bye to Dave and caught up with my boys.
The Lowlight: Waiting for what seemed like eternity for the encore and when they finally came back on stage, Julian starting ranting about how The Strokes "don't do encores." He said this was the last time they're doing an encore for the duration of the tour. They performed "Is This It?," so fitting, and walked off like the rockers they are. (And I still think they're think cute and talented! Only more proof that girls love assholes.)

The Sounds w/ Run Run Run
October 10, Cafe Du Nord, San Francisco, CA

In the words of Maja (vocals), "FUCKING AWESOME!" These people know how to rock, they love rocking out, and they understand the importance of engaging the audience.
The Highlight: When The Run Run Run bassist told an annoying audience member to shut up and listen.

Interpol
Sept 29, Warfield, San Francisco, CA

Devin went, Mike went. Bustos went, Dan went, I went.
Mike was very drunk and tried to start shit with people but, you know, people hate to get into fights. I was also drunk but I was well-behaved. :) Except when Mike pulled me down to the floor and I think some chick said, "This is my worst nightmare..." Hmm... Okay. Ratatat was pretty cool but The Warlocks were not. The Warlocks had TWO drummers playing the same thing, that's just overtop. As for Interpol... Carlos D was sexy as ever. Paul Banks is not even half as good looking as people think he is (but I already knew that). They just love him because he sings for Interpol.
The Highlight: "Roland" and the fact that Warfield has Stella Artois on tap.

Sensational Lawn
September 11, Shannon Arms Pub, San Francisco, CA

The Evening
August 14, Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco, CA

The Walkmen w/ Kaito and Dios
September 14, Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco, CA

I liked Dios better than The Walkmen. They just got signed too. Kaito is a girl-lead band from the UK. Kinda reminds me of a more refined version of Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Squarepusher
July 23, Mezzanine, San Francisco, CA

Rilo Kiley
July 8, Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA

Jenny Lewis is cute and much more angry in her songs than on the album. I would recommend checking out their shows if you're even just sorta into the album. The show made me happy.

The Evening
July 5, San Francisco, CA

Le Tigre
June 24, The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA

More girls should get into music if Le Tigre is any indication of where females in music can go. "It's alright, it's alright, it's alright!!!"

White Stripes
April 29, Warfield, San Francisco, CA

I fell in love with Meg White. She's sooooo cute!! It makes me think I could be a drummer. The Betty Boop cartoons before the show started was a nice touch as was the decorations in the hallways and the roses at the end of the show.

The Girls
April 17, Parkside, San Francisco, CA

The Vines with The Music and Youth Group
March 22, The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA

Youth Group sucked. The Music sucked even more, but the singer was pretty entertaining to watch. He was flailing his arms about and was jumping around the stage like a man who is on multiple drugs. I got drunk. Devin somehow talked me out of staying to see The Vines and we took the bus back to his place. What a waste of money.

Interpol
February 15, The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA

Fucking awesome, what else can I say? Plus I got a poster from The Fillmore. Yay! But don't try to take a camera, they're mean about that.

The Evening
February 4, Cafe Du Nord, San Francisco, CA

2002

The Girls
December 12, Parkside, San Francisco, CA

The Strokes
October 31, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, CA

Live 105's BFD #9
June 14, Shoreline, Mountain View, CA

P.O.D, Rob Zombie, The Vines, The Strokes, Goldfinger, Dashboard Confession, Jimmy Eat World, Hoobstank, N.E.R.D, Papa Roach... I'm probably missing a bunch.

Radiohead
April, Shoreline, Mountain View, CA

I think Radiohead shows are overrated. It wasn't terribly exciting because they were like miniature men on stage while I was far, far away in the lawn. The fans were too polite and quiet. There was no crowd movement, no drunken rowdiness. Boring. I mean, the music itself was good, but the excitment was lacking.

2000

Alice's Now and Zen Fest
Summer, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

Travis, Dogstar(?). I got Travi's autograph. They were one of my favorite bands at the time so I was stoked.
1999

Nsync, 98 Degrees
Fall, San Jose Arena, San Jose, CA

I ONLY WENT BECAUSE MY FRIEND HAD AN EXTRA TICKET. We had nosebleed seats. 98 Degrees was as hot as their namesake. Yeehaw!

Alice's Now and Zen Fest
Summer, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

Jewel, Fleming and John. Fleming and John is so awesome. I talked to them in the autograph booth and they were just so nice! Jewel was alright.
