Attn: Betties and, uh, whatever they call dudes

A few friends and I have a ski house in north lake tahoe, near Truckee, for the upcoming ski season (Dec-April). We have some spots left for people who want to stay with us for the whole season. Please let me know if you're interested.

Update 9/5: Anyone? Anyone?

Grumble, grumble...

Today was my first day driving alone in my brand spanking new shiny shiny speedy and (most importantly) totally inappropriate-for-me car.

I have officially decided that driving in San Francisco sucks ass. I had to drive around double parked cars on almost every block I drove on during my behind-the-wheel test! How other people pass the test is beyond me. Well, on the brightside, I do actually own a car and have my very own parking space.

Hooray for a driver's license, car, and parking space.
Boo for SF's crazy drivers.

New sea creature friend

DZ got me this absolutely adorable knit octopus from Branch after I posted it to Thisnext. It's made in rural Kenya from natural materials. Definitely an heirloom toy to hold on to. Oh, and sooooo cute! (Thanks, DZ)

Where's my veggie dog?

Where Everyone Is a Critic

Yelp.com enables ordinary customers to tout or trash. For owners of restaurants and shops, it's no longer business as usual.

SAN FRANCISCO — Sorry, the hot dog vendor said, no more veggie dogs. Then, as a disappointed Monica Lee ordered fries instead, his gaze drifted south and settled on her chest.

Awkward pause.

"I'm scared of you guys," he said finally, pointing to Lee's olive-green lapel pin for Yelp.com, a website on which Bay Area hipsters post reviews of hot dog stands, five-star restaurants, corner bars and neighborhood hardware stores.

A few good words on Yelp can make cash registers ring. Enough dings — like, say, no veggie dogs or a rude waitress — can put a dent in business. Although the Internet is blamed for debasing public discourse with anonymous and poorly punctuated tirades, the amateur reviews posted on Yelp may be helping restore gentility and customer service to businesses all over town.

Connie, Miriam, and me at Stern Grove

David and I joined my friends at Stern Grove to see Crown City Rockers and Ozomatli on Sunday. We got there before noon and it was completely packed. Shortly after we arrived they closed the gates because there are too many people. The people sitting directly above us arrived at 8:30 to secure their spots. These free shows are getting a little too insane.
